Texas State Highway
THE AGGIE EXPRESSWAY
TXDOT (Texas Department Of Transportation) work continues work on the
Texas Highway 249 extension, as
planned the 2x2-lane highway travels North-Northwest out of
Houston toward Bryan/College Station and Waco. The TX249
Extension project will provide a more direct connection between
the North Houston area and TX Highway 6 at Navasota. A study completed
in 2002 defined a Right-of-Way for the TX249 extension through
Tombal, Pinehurst, Magnolia, and Todd Mansion.
Until recently TX249 was a short segment of freeway named the
Tomball Freeway taking off Northwest from the Sam Houston Toll way
(Loop 8).
Traffic between Houston and Bryan College Station presently
uses US290 (NW Fwy) West to Hempstead then North up HWY 6
Work to prepare HWY 6 from Navasota to Millican continues at a
good pace.
The Texas State Highway 249 will be a more direct
shot Tomball to Navasota, from where HWY 6 is straight,
eliminating the jog to Hempstead. This extended highway roughly follows FM1774 to
near Plantersville/Stoneham then HWY 105 to Navasota.
The net effect is a quick connection between IH-45 in
Houston and IH-35 at Waco, on to Dallas-Forth Worth
